Job Title: Full Time Veterinary Technician

General Description of Position:  The veterinary technician (VT) is the primary support to the doctors and patients.  Must be able to pay attention to detail, respond quickly and calmly to crises, and maintain very high standards of patient care.  The VT must be able to communicate well with our clients and peers.

Job Requirements/Skill/Physical Demands:  The VT must have a working knowledge of medical equipment, be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, and effectively restrain animals.  The VT must be able to quickly and accurately calculate dosages.  Must have an RVT Degree and be nationally and state certified.

Continuing Education Requirements: Maintaining a minimum of 20 continuing education hours per year is required to meet hospital requirements.  CE hours earned are from September 1st through August 31st, reported annually.

Reports To: Dr. Manuel Garcia, Dr. Nicole Shevokas, Associate Veterinarians, and Practice Manager

Supervises: Veterinary Tech Assistants

Essential Functions:

Medical Requirements:

  • Have knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of IDEXX Lab Equipment – Vet-test, Vet-lyte, Lasercyte.
  • Working knowledge of digital radiograph machine and automatic processors, dental machines, autoclave, pulse oximeter, apnea monitor, flow pumps, anesthetic machines, EKG, re-breathing system, 2-way non-rebreather system, and indirect BP systems.
  • Perform catheterizations; give injections in accordance with government regulations and Doctors’ orders.
  • Perform routine lab analyses, i.e. hematology, serology, blood chemistry, urinalysis, cytology’s, fecal tests, and skin scrapings. Prepare cultures for bacteriological examination and samples for outside lab work.
  • Administer/monitor anesthesia in accordance with state regulations; assist in surgery (scrub tech and circulator). Perform routine dental cleanings.
  • Perform emergency procedures under the DVM’s supervision such as control bleeding, administer fluids, apply temporary bandages, triage, assist with CPR, and breathing for patients when needed.
  • Have adequate knowledge base of pharmaceuticals and filling prescriptions, administer oral drugs, colonic irrigation, wound dressings, and fluid therapy.
  • Take EKG and EEG tracings; take and develop radiographs.

Customer Service

  • Provide client education regarding nutrition, parasite control, vaccination protocols, spaying and neutering, post surgical care, behavioral problems, etc.
  • Counsel clients regarding home care, medication administration, etc.

General Duties:

  • Train assistants in the above areas as able according to state regulations.
  • Maintain pharmacy records, medical equipment, and accurate daily records in patient files.
  • Take physical inventory.
  • Perform tasks assigned to the veterinary assistants as needed; assist the receptionist.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Dress Code

  • Scrub top & scrub pant, and name badge.
  • Closed toe shoes.
  • Body piercing hardware must be removed. Only small ear rings are acceptable in ears.
  • Tattoos at the discretion of management may need to be covered.

Work Environment:  All areas of the hospital and barn area, a high level of patient and client interaction, have exposure to radiographs, chemotherapy medications and anesthetic gases with proper protective measures.

Job Title: Full Time Veterinary Technician Assistant

General Description of Position:  The veterinary assistant works closely with the veterinary technician.  Must be able to follow orders quickly (verbally and handwritten) and handle animals in situations that may be less than ideal. Take care of the everyday needs of the patients of San Juan Veterinary Hospital.

Job Requirements/Skill/Physical Demands:  Ability to be on feet and moving quickly for extended periods.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and effectively restrain animals; able to take direction from Team Leaders, Doctors and the Practice Manager; and carry them out effectively and efficiently.  Other duties could include but are not limited to patient care, phlebotomy, catheter placement, anesthesia (induction, monitoring & recovering) dentistry, radiology, scrub tech, surgery, circulator, & laboratory.  Other duties would include cleaning kennels, cleaning runs, shoveling snow, & washing concrete, and laundry.

Reports To:  Dr. Garcia, Dr. Shevokas, Practice Manager, Doctor-on-Duty, RVT, Team Leader

Essential Functions:

Level 1 Assistant – Entry Level:

  • Clean kennels and runs throughout the day; provide clean litter boxes, bedding, food and water to all patients
  • Collect urine/fecal samples as directed.
  • Record and report important information about animal’s conditions.
  • Prepare animals for dismissal – cleaning and brushing.
  • Do laundry and maintain food prep area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Answer treatment phone call re patients and properly relay message to Primary Doctor
  • Be able obtain temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate on pets

Level 2 Assistant:

  • Perform duties outlined in Level 1.
  • Assist Doctors and Technicians with animal restraint.
  • Assist Technicians in animal care such as placing catheters, taking radiographs, drawing blood, etc.
  • Receive training in performing routine lab work.
  • Take, develop, and file radiographs.
  • Help out Surgery Team with induction, recovery, surgical packs, and daily cleaning
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Level 3 Assistant:

  • Perform duties outlined in Levels 1 and 2.
  • Perform dentals under supervision of DVM.
  • Administer anesthetic drugs under supervision of Team Leaders and Doctors.
  • Assist Doctors in surgery (scrub nurse).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
