Happy Holidays! We want you and your pets to stay warm and safe this winter, so take a look at these pet safety tips.

Limit time outdoors in extreme cold. Just like people, pets can suffer from frostbite and hypothermia in freezing temperatures. Limit outdoor time during especially cold days, and pay close attention to smaller breeds, short-haired pets, puppies, and senior pets, who are more vulnerable to the cold.

Protect paws from ice and salt. Ice-melting products used on sidewalks and roads can irritate your pet’s paw pads and can be harmful if licked off. Wipe your pet’s paws after walks, and consider pet-safe booties for extra protection during winter walks.

Watch for antifreeze hazards. Antifreeze has a sweet taste that can attract pets, but even small amounts are highly toxic and potentially fatal. Clean up any spills immediately and store antifreeze safely out of reach.

Provide a warm space indoors. Make sure your pet has access to a warm, draft-free space to sleep, away from cold floors or drafty windows. Outdoor pets need extra shelter and bedding to stay warm during winter months.

Be cautious with holiday decorations. Tinsel, ornaments, and holiday plants like poinsettias and mistletoe can pose choking or toxicity risks to curious pets. Keep decorations out of reach and supervise pets around the holiday tree.

Watch holiday food and treats. Rich holiday foods, chocolate, and sweets containing xylitol can all be dangerous for pets. Keep an eye on what’s within reach during gatherings, and ask guests not to share table scraps.

Keep up with wellness care. Winter is a good time to make sure your pet is caught up on wellness exams and any ongoing health needs before the busy holiday season gets underway.

If your pet shows any signs of cold-weather illness or gets into something they shouldn’t during the holidays, call San Juan Veterinary Hospital at (505) 326-2205. Have fun and stay safe this winter!
